How who owes whom is worked out

First you add everything up and divide by the number of people: that's everyone's share. Then, for each person, you subtract the share from what they paid. A positive balance means they get money back, a negative one means they owe.

Finally the biggest debts are matched with the biggest credits. That's how four people get square with three transfers instead of six.

The example above · share €103.15

Marco paid €240.00+€136.85

Sara paid €96.00−€7.15

Luca paid €44.60−€58.55

Anna paid €32.00−€71.15

With Roastrip the bill adds up by itself, while you travel.

Questions about the calculation

Is my data saved anywhere?

No: the calculator works only in your browser and sends nothing. The link you share keeps the numbers after the # sign, a part of the address that browsers never send anywhere. To keep the accounts with your group during the trip, there's the app.

Can I split an expense between just some people?

Yes: in the "Split" column untick whoever wasn't part of it, and the expense is split equally among the rest. If the cents don't divide evenly, the extra ones go to the first people on the list: the total always adds up to the cent.

What if someone arrives a day later?

Here every expense is split equally among the people you choose. To split the accommodation by each person's nights there's the app: you mark who was there day by day and the bill works itself out.

Does it work with foreign currencies?

The calculator works in euro. In the app every expense is logged in its own currency, crowns, pounds or forints too, and converted at the day's rate, even when you're offline.
